Saxon – Wheels of Steel | Metal Territory

Saxon are one of the most important bands in British heavy metal, and “Wheels of Steel” is the record that made them famous. It came out in 1980, a year considered pivotal for the genre: that’s when Iron Maiden’s first album came out too, along with other important records of the movement that became known as NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal).

The record’s sound is raw and full of energy, as befits the era. The songs have strong riffs and catchy choruses, with “Wheels of Steel” and “747 (Strangers in the Night)” standing out. Biff Byford’s voice is the band’s big asset: powerful, clear and full of character, it sets the tone for the whole album.

“Wheels of Steel” was Saxon’s second album and it did very well, helping them establish themselves alongside bands like Iron Maiden, Angel Witch and Diamond Head. The reviews were positive: Sputnikmusic rated it 3.5 out of 5, noting that although it isn’t among the best albums of the genre, it’s full of anthems worth hearing.

The album’s success was so great that the band went straight back into the studio: just four months later they released “Strong Arm of the Law“, which followed the same recipe. Saxon continue to play to this day, with the characteristic eagle of their logo having returned on their recent tours.
