“Triarchy of the Lost Lovers” came out on April 29, 1996 and was Rotting Christ’s first album for Century Media, with whom they signed a six-album deal and stayed for ten years.
Country: Greece
Genre: Melodic Black Metal
For fans of: Moonspell, Samael, Tiamat
The recording took place in March 1996 at Stage One Studio in Bühne, Germany, with Andy Classen producing. The sound shifts once more: tempos drop, the songs become more imposing and the gothic influence settles in. The exception is “Archon”, the fastest and most violent track on the record, which stayed in their live sets for years. The cover art is by Stephen Kasner. It is also the last album with bassist Jim Mutilator, who left during the year and was replaced by Andreas Lagios.
The release was followed by a two-month European tour with Samael and Moonspell, roughly 48 shows in 60 days. The EP “Der Perfekte Traum” came a little later out of the recordings from that tour in Poland. The record was reissued several times on vinyl, by Floga Records in Greece and by Soulseller Records, which added two Kreator covers.
Our take
This is the record where the band found the formula that followed them for years: heavy, slow songs with clean melodies. “King of a Stellar War” is one of the most beautiful things they have ever written.
