Mastodon have officially announced their new studio album “Marrow Deep”, which is released on 28 August via Loma Vista Recordings. Along with the announcement, the band present the new single “Snakes For Dinner”, which features Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age on vocals.
The track comes with an official music video and is the second taste of the album, after “Your Ghost Again”, which quickly became a fan favourite and took the No.2 spot in Revolver‘s readers’ poll for the best songs of 2026.
The return of Josh Homme
Homme’s involvement marks his first appearance on a Mastodon recording since “Colony of Birchmen” in 2006. “Snakes For Dinner” moves between crushing riffs and melodic peaks, exploring themes of grief, memory and continuity — elements that run through the whole of “Marrow Deep”.
A new chapter for Mastodon
Five years after “Hushed and Grim”, “Marrow Deep” finds Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher entering a new creative phase, influenced by personal losses and upheavals. The album draws inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the subtle connections between life, loss and destiny.
“Marrow Deep” is also the first full‑length Mastodon album with guitarist Nick Johnston, who joined the band after the death of Brent Hinds. The contribution of keyboardist João Nogueira is also significant.
Production & collaborations
The album was co‑produced by Mastodon at West End Sound in Atlanta, together with Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (High On Fire, Converge). The mix was handled by Andrew Scheps, known for work with Adele, Black Sabbath and Metallica.
The band has already announced that the album will include other guest musicians, who will be announced soon.
The documentary “The Mastodon In The Room”
The album announcement comes shortly after the release of the short film “The Mastodon In The Room”, which documents the band’s effort to deal with the grief around Brent Hinds’ death. The film examines the group’s 25‑year path and the circumstances that led to Hinds’ departure before his tragic death in a motorcycle accident.
Troy Sanders states: «We’re excited to keep going. The chemistry is back, everyone hungry, united and excited to work. It feels like the band’s early days.»
