Justin Broadrick: Back with Phoebe Bridgers — he plays on «On Video» from the film «Primetime»

Justin Broadrick, the mastermind behind Godflesh and Jesu, is collaborating with Phoebe Bridgers for the third time: he plays guitar and bass on «On Video», the song she wrote for the end credits of the film «Primetime».

The film is an A24 production, directed by Lance Oppenheim, with Robert Pattinson in the role of a TV journalist in 2006, during the era of the show «To Catch A Predator». The cast also includes Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Matthew Maher and Bokeem Woodbine, while Bridgers makes her first substantial appearance as an actress here.

«Primetime» premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month and is now playing in theaters. «On Video» is the first song Bridgers has written specifically for a film’s end credits: it starts quietly, breaks into a loud, distorted section and calms down again toward the end.

It’s not their first meeting. Broadrick played guitar on «Bobby» and on the hidden final track «Best Dressed» of «Lost Weekend», her third album, released in August. He has stressed that the invitation came through Jesu and their shoegaze sound, not Godflesh — on the album he’s credited as Justin Broadrick / Jesu.

«On Video» came out on September 25, the same day Godflesh released «Decay», their tenth album and the penultimate of their discography, on Relapse. Broadrick had announced in March that Godflesh would not play live again, following hernia surgery, and has said a final album is already written and will be recorded during the year. Jesu and JK Flesh continue.

Bridgers is on tour for «Lost Weekend» — her first tour with a full band since 2023 — and has already played «On Video» live in Chicago and Columbus.
