INFERNAL STORM – Winter Of The Ancient Wrath

The band has undergone radical lineup changes, with founder Agis Tzoukopoulos being the only original member, now joined by three new, experienced musicians (from acts such as Triumpher, Blasfemator and Valon Vinter). The 18-minute EP is an impressive sample of modern Black Metal with strong Heavy Metal foundations, while production has been handled by the master of the genre, Achilleas Kalantzis (Varathron, Katavasia).

REVIEW : Although Infernal Storm have just acquired a brand-new line-up, “Winter Of The Ancient Wrath” was written before these changes, so we’re essentially hearing Agis’ clear, personal vision. And what a vision! It’s evident that his experience from his time in Kawir and Triumpher has evolved him tremendously as a musician. The EP is a huge step forward in quality and creativity. Its strongest card is that it doesn’t follow the beaten path of classic Hellenic Black Metal (see Rotting Christ, Necromantia, Varathron). On the contrary, it looks straight at Northern Europe, yet with a very strong, traditional Heavy Metal skeleton that makes the compositions tremendously sturdy and tight.

Achilleas Kalantzis’ production is massive and “full”, highlighting the tiniest detail. Maybe some extreme “trve” fans will find it a little cleaner than they’d like, but trust me, it fits the band’s style like a glove. The fast, blasting bursts alternate flawlessly with slower, melancholic and epic parts, making an 18-minute listen that goes down in one gulp. It’s the perfect “restart” for a band we should now keep very closely on our radar.
