Review | Metal Territory

Evergrey continue relentlessly: Architects Of A New Weave is their sixth release in six years. Dark, heavy, melancholic and more aggressive than their previous works, the album shows a band that has left behind the power metal influences and now stands on a more djent, more modern, more downtuned base.

The seven-string guitars change the character of the record. More open tunings, stop-start riffing, a darker tonality and a more aggressive mood. Tracks like “The Shadow Self” and “Chains Of Shame” clearly show this turn. Evergrey always had downtuned guitars, but here the extended range fits their style better.

There’s variety in the composition: – “The World Is On Fire” and “Call Off Your Lions” have a gothic metal feel with mid-paced guitars and synths. – “Architects” and “Leaving The Emptiness” move in a more pop metal line, with strong hooks and a more «easy» structure. – “A Burning Flame” brings melodic death metal elements, with pedal-tone riffing and the participation of Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity). His contribution, however, is small and isn’t used as much as it should be.

Evergrey can’t escape the ballads. “The Script” and “Longing” cut the flow of the record, with excessive melodrama and vocal lines that don’t add anything. Although there’s less «ballad filler» compared to Theories of Emptiness, these tracks remain weak points.

When the band hits right, though, the result is strong: heavy riffs, dark atmosphere, big choruses and clean production. Architects Of A New Weave is an album that leaves the old power metal DNA behind and focuses on more modern, heavier progressive metal. It has a few weaknesses in the flow, but overall it’s a solid release that will resonate with both old and new listeners.
