Colin Brittain took part in Drumeo’s «For The First Time» challenge: to work out the drum part of Iron Maiden’s «Hallowed Be Thy Name» while hearing it for the first time. The format gives the drummer the track without drums and with no prior listen, with him working on it on camera before recording the final performance.
The Linkin Park drummer admitted he hadn’t happened to hear the song, nor much of the band’s catalog, even though for two decades he has worked on and around rock music as a producer and songwriter.
The drums on «Hallowed Be Thy Name» are Clive Burr’s, not Nicko McBrain’s. «The Number Of The Beast», which came out in March 1982, was Burr’s third and final album with Iron Maiden. He left at the end of that year and McBrain replaced him in December 1982, making his debut on «Piece Of Mind». Burr was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 90s and died in March 2013 at the age of 56. The song closes the album, runs past seven minutes and changes tempo several times, from the slow opening to the gallop that became the band’s trademark.
Born Colin Cunningham in Pensacola, Florida and raised in Nashville, Brittain started out playing in Oh No Fiasco, who left behind one EP before breaking up in 2013. Over the following decade he sat behind the console, writing, producing and mixing for Papa Roach, A Day To Remember, 311, One Ok Rock, All Time Low, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Dashboard Confessional and Story Of The Year. His work on Papa Roach’s «Crooked Teeth» in 2017 became his best-known credit.
He met Mike Shinoda at a writing session in 2021 and was announced as Linkin Park’s drummer on September 5, 2024, along with singer Emily Armstrong, after Rob Bourdon decided not to take part in the return. He also co-produced «From Zero». It isn’t his first appearance on Drumeo: in March he had played the entire «From Zero» for the channel. Linkin Park’s concert film «Unshatter», directed by Joe Hahn, hits theaters on September 30.
