Obscura: Criminal complaints and lawsuits in Germany over public accusations | Metal Territory

Obscura announced last Saturday that they have filed criminal complaints and civil lawsuits in Germany against individuals, over posts and behaviour the band describes as defamatory, offensive or untrue. Their statement does not name anyone and does not explain which posts the case concerns.

According to their statement, complaints and requests for prosecution have been filed in Germany since February 2026, with material covering incidents from 2015 to the present — disputed claims about the band and its members, copyright issues, the publication of personal data and other behaviour they have asked the authorities to examine. At the same time, civil proceedings are underway over the resulting financial losses.

The band says the fallout went beyond them: companies and professional partners abroad report threats and pressure, some have recorded serious financial losses, while there have been practical problems in their international activity too, with “significant difficulties” in obtaining visas for shows in China. They ask fans, journalists and partners not to feed speculation or public confrontation, stressing “don’t confuse accusations published online with proven facts”, and say they will not comment on the substance of the case while proceedings are pending.

The backstory is not new. In early 2025, after the single “Evenfall” and the release of the album “A Sonication”, former bassist Alex Weber said the song used material of his, maintaining that he had written assurance it would not be used. Max Phelps of Exist publicly backed him, while former guitarist Christian Münzner, who left in 2024, said his riffs were used too. At the time Steffen Kummerer had responded by speaking of “needless public defamation”. In their new statement, Obscura do not link the legal moves to that dispute. So far no charge, ruling or outcome has been announced.
