Ian Gillan was asked by Bulgarian “Z-Rock” what makes music last from generation to generation. His answer comes down to one thing: not chasing whatever is popular at the moment.
The Deep Purple singer explained that anyone making commercial records by following trends will struggle, unless they are very, very good at it, like ABBA. If you are true to yourself, he stressed, you have a chance — and when you succeed by staying true, the performance is honest and “it will last”.
He was also asked where the ideas for the new album came from and traced them to a childhood obsession. Science and surreal ideas always interested him, and he even remembers that at eight years old he was fascinated by the concept of infinity: it seemed impossible to him, until he understood it cannot be anything else. These days he likes the combination of science with instinct and believes that, if you jump the fence and build your own space, you can put whatever you want inside it.
“Splat!” was released on July 3 via earMUSIC and is based on his own idea: he sees the end of humanity not as destruction, but as a transformation into something beyond physical existence. It is Deep Purple’s 24th studio album and the sixth with producer Bob Ezrin, who has worked on every record of theirs since “Now What?!” in 2013.
