Vafurlogi return with an album that shows clearly that the band has fully entered the game of the Icelandic black metal scene. Gneisti af eldi Guðs is more mature, clearer in its thinking and more focused than their debut. It doesn’t try to impress with excess — it simply builds atmosphere, tension and melody in a way that only Icelanders seem to know.

“Af heilagri heift” opens the album with an energy that pulls you in immediately. The guitars have that characteristic “swirl” that recalls Sinmara, but here there’s more melody and a clearer structure. The drums are constantly in motion, but without drowning the rest. The production has space, depth and a warm resonance that gives it character.
“Þegar rykið sest” is one of the most atmospheric tracks on the album. The guitars build an almost “misty” melody that rises and falls without ever losing control. It’s a track that puts you in a mood, without needing to become overly aggressive.
The title track “Vafurlogi” is perhaps the most direct track on the album. It has that folk‑melodic touch that recalls the first album a little, but here it’s more mature, more cohesive. The riffing is clean, melodic and at the same time dark.
“Vitjun” is one of the most “Swedish” moments on the album. It brings to mind old melodic black metal, with riffs that have weight and a melancholy that sticks in your head. It’s one of those tracks that stand out without trying.

“Earthly Vestiges” closes the album in the most dramatic way. Long duration, slow build, tension that rises gradually and a sense that the band leaves everything it has in the last track. It’s one of those closings that make you want to put the album on again from the start.
Gneisti af eldi Guðs shows a band that knows what it wants to do. Melodic black metal with depth, atmosphere and a clear identity. It doesn’t try to become something else — and that’s its strong point.
