SOLEMNITY – Opus Barbaricum

Style: European Heavy Metal / Epic Heavy Metal

For fans of: Accept, HammerFall, Sabaton

Country: Germany

Release: May 15, 2026 (Solemnity Music / HOFA)

Duration: 17 tracks

Opus Barbaricum is a return that comes after many years of silence and presents in the clearest way what we often describe as “European heavy metal”. Melodiousness is at the center: classical influences in the composition, clean vocals with strong theatricality, sing‑along choruses and guitars that constantly play against the vocal lines. It’s a style that recalls Accept, but with a more epic and more “cinematic” mood.

Solemnity started in 1998, building a name through live appearances and an aesthetic influenced by classic horror. Opus Barbaricum gathers all the elements that characterized the band: heavy metal riffing, epic melodies, themes based on myths, fantasy and dark literature. With 17 tracks, the album works like a big collection of stories, sometimes serious and sometimes humorous, such as “Meat Evil Steal (A Barbecue Symphony in B Minor)” or “Cheesecake Commando”.

The band’s sound recalls a slower, heavier version of HammerFall, with quite a few elements that bring Sabaton to mind — not so much in the themes, but in the structure of the songs and the use of choruses. The ballad “Freya” shows the album’s melodic side, while tracks like “The Last Ghostrider”, “Storm of Steel” and “Drums of War (Resistance)” move along a more classic heavy metal path.

There is, however, also a sense of “unease” around the material. The band’s own history — official breakup in 2018, but releases of unreleased tracks that kept circulating among fans — creates the impression that Opus Barbaricum may be a collection of older recordings. Certain titles and the general unevenness among the 17 tracks reinforce this feeling. Even so, the album works like a complete picture of the band: epic heavy metal, melodic, theatrical and with a good dose of humor.

Opus Barbaricum is not an album that tries to discover something new. It is, however, an honest, rich and enjoyable return, full of melodies, riffs and an old‑school aesthetic you rarely come across today. For those who love European heavy metal, it’s a release worth hearing.
