«Modern Primitive» is Septicflesh‘s eleventh record. It was released on May 20, 2022 via Nuclear Blast, their new record on a new label after years at Season of Mist.
Country: Greece
Genre: Symphonic death metal
For fans of: Rotting Christ, Necromantia, Nightfall
The title isn’t random: the album moves around the «modern primitivism» movement, that is, the return to ritual body practices — tattoos, piercing, scars, modifications — within the modern world. The movement is linked to Roland Loomis, known as Fakir Musafar, and to the 1989 book «Modern Primitives» by RE/Search, one of the first to study the phenomenon.
Musically the record continues the symphonic line of the previous years, with more atmospheric passages and moments that sound almost like a ritual. The videos for «Hierophant» and «Neuromancer» presented the tracks before and after the release, while the record entered the charts in Belgium (104) and France (138).
Our take
It’s the record where Septicflesh united their heaviest side with an idea that suits them perfectly: the ritual and the primordial within a world full of technology. The sound remains ambitious and personal.
