REVIEW : How much melody can extreme sound ultimately take before it starts losing its “teeth”? It’s a double-edged sword. If you overdo it, the rage gets watered down; if you leave it out, you risk monotony. On their second album, “The Echoless Chasm”, Belialed flirt heavily with that dangerous line, pushing melody to its limits. And the impressive thing is that they come out winners.
Instead of just playing fast, Belialed use melody as a tool for building tension. They slip crystal-clear guitar arpeggios in where you least expect them, preparing the ground for a violent change in tempo. At the same time, the open chords (now a must in modern BM) give their music tremendous room to breathe. Don’t be fooled though: the savagery holds strong. On “Invoke The Elements”, for example, the drums and vocals deliver pure, maniacal assault. But even there, the guitars find the crack to drop a melodic phrase and break up the swagger. These guys have gone as far as writing a track (“The River Carries Her Essence”) that challenges you to sing along to the chorus, demolishing every orthodox black metal rule!
