REVIEW | Metal Territory
Devin Townsend has gone through countless phases, but with The Moth it seems he’s gathering his entire journey and turning it into one massive metal symphony. The album is built as a single work, with no verses‑choruses, with constant changes of mood: orchestra, choirs, prog bursts, calmer moments, even chaotic passages that recall his craziest eras. The three voices (Devin, Anneke, Lynn Wu) blend impressively, while the orchestra adds cinematic depth to every track. There are moments that genuinely lift you out of your seat, like “Covered by Causes” with its huge chorus and choirs that fill the space.
The album also has darker, more melancholic sides, but always with that characteristic emotion Devin brings when he wants to talk about life, fears and hope. Although the production is clean and powerful, there are points where the vocals sit a little further back in the mix and some of the intensity is lost. Also, certain short interludes break the flow, especially when they cut in abruptly between larger themes. Even so, The Moth is one of his most ambitious works, full of energy, emotion and huge moments that stay with you. A work that shows why Townsend remains one of a kind. Final score: 8.5/10
