Amon Amarth – The new acoustic “Upphaf” and the calm breath before the storm | Metal Territory

Amon Amarth did something no one expected: they set aside the epic riffs, the battles, the shields and the fires, and released “Upphaf”, the first acoustic track of their career. A song that has nothing to do with their known style — and that’s exactly why it’s interesting. It’s the moment of calm before the next storm, a break that feels like a story around the fire in a distant longhouse.

“Upphaf” strips their sound down to the bone. No distortion, no warlike drive, just melodies, choirs and an atmosphere that recalls old Norse epic. It’s like hearing a story passed from generation to generation, whispered under Odin’s gaze. Jacob Hansen’s production keeps the track minimal but alive, while Pavel Trebukhin’s video gives exactly the visual needed: dark, ritualistic, almost mystical.

Amon Amarth have built a course that needs no introductions. From 1992 to today, they have played with Slayer, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, Pantera, have filled The Forum, have conquered Red Rocks, have made Wacken look like a battlefield for 85,000 people. They have become a reference point for European metal, have reached #1 in Germany, have earned a Grammy nomination in Sweden, have built a fan base that starts at 12-year-olds and reaches 60+.

And of course, they have created one of the most recognizable phenomena of metal culture: the Viking Row. The moment when thousands of people sit on the ground and “row” as if they’re on a drakkar. It started at Bloodstock in 2009 and now appears everywhere — even at the World Cup 2026. “Put Your Back Into the Oar” became an anthem, and Johan Hegg said it plainly: “This is for you, the fans”.

“Upphaf” is not just an acoustic track. It’s a calm introduction to something bigger. A sign that the band is preparing a new album, and before the next hammer falls, they let us take a breath. Not to relax — but to prepare.

Amon Amarth haven’t lost anything. On the contrary, they show they can move outside the battlefield too, without losing their identity. “Upphaf” is the fire before the attack.
