Review
Escumergamënt return with Apparebat Eidolon Senex, a second album that continues their path through a surreal, deathly black metal universe. Seven tracks, seven “appearances” of an ancient demon, with the band moving between atmospheric fog and melodic delirium, keeping the same strange aura they had on their debut.

Escumergamënt have existed since 2016, but only released music in 2020. They play a melancholic, dark black metal that stands clearly on the second generation of the 90s. Their identity remains anonymous, but the text mentions possible participants: Pär Stille (Stilla, Bergraven) seems to be the main composer, while Infaustus (Sorghegard, former Setherial) is possibly the singer. This fits the style: surreal rasp, atmospheric fog and a sense of an ancient curse.
Their first album, …ni degu fazentz escumergament e mesorga… (2021), had a dreamy, almost hypnotic atmosphere, with a death‑worship aesthetic and melodies that seemed to hover over a frozen landscape. On Apparebat Eidolon Senex, the atmosphere/aggression ratio changes slightly. The guitars have more “volume”, the voices sit further forward and the overall presence is more immediate. It doesn’t become a “cleaner” production; the band simply fills the space more, as if it moved from distant fog to a closer, threatening presence. The style recalls something between Min Tid Skal Komme (in spirit, not in sound) and the epic, distorted chaos of Verwüstung / Invoke the Dark Age.

“Within the Inner” opens with echo and snarl, while slow, cathedral‑like synths build beneath the vocals. The use of keys isn’t intense everywhere, but when they appear they create tension and anticipation before the melodic changes. The album works best when these elements develop gradually (“Laudanum and a Silver Scalpel”, “The Eyeless Festering God”) or when everything hits at once (“Radiant Glimmering Whorl”).
“The Demon’s Approach” is a track that moves within “dead space”, with scraping, dark atmosphere and a climax that brings light into the darkness. “To the Graves!” at the end combines all the elements: ambient, black metal, atmosphere and melodic delirium into a more adventurous result.
The album isn’t immediate. It wants time, it wants submersion. At first it seems to get lost among atmospheric transitions, but the more you let it pull you in, the clearer the picture becomes. Escumergamënt have that ability: to put you in a space that is neither beautiful nor repulsive, but something in between, something that holds you. Apparebat Eidolon Senex is more immediate than the first, more threatening and deeper. A very strong follow‑up.
