REVIEW | Metal Territory
Wormlord return with Choices, a second full‑length that continues exactly where the debut left off: pure‑bred Finnish OSDM with buzzsaw guitars, groove and thrashy energy. The band started as Saasta in 2019, but has now found its character — and that shows from the very first riff.
The album opens with groovy, chuggy HM‑2 riffs that quickly turn into mid‑tempo tremolos, with trills and small melodic touches. There are thrash moments, d‑beat passages and plenty of headbang‑inducing points. The melodies appear isolated, almost haunting, before the groove returns. The dive bombs and chuggy, “bouncy” lines add extra character, while the tremolo harmonies tie in beautifully with the dirty buzzsaw tone.
“Ivory Tower” stands out as the ballad of the record: acoustic harmonies, clean atmosphere and melodic passages that show a more sensitive side of the band. At the same time, the album has enough thrash energy to keep the aggression high.
The title track “Choices” is full of chuggy riffs that never stop, with small clean guitars for two seconds, doom passages and trills at the end that let the HM‑2 breathe.
The best track on the record is “Undying”. It starts with doom riffs that turn groovy, has d‑beat, tremolo harmonies, thrash energy and guitar isolation for atmosphere. The solos are shreddy, with whammy bar accents, tremolo phrases, and appear more than once in the same track. There are tapping harmonies and toward the end of the record synths also come in for extra depth.
Choices is full of catchy riffing, dirt, groove and technical details that don’t wear thin. For those looking for new HM‑2 material that “scratches the itch” for buzzsaw death metal, Wormlord offer one of the strongest OSDM albums of the year.
