At the Gates – Slaughter of the Soul | Metal Territory

At the Gates released their fourth album, “Slaughter of the Soul”, on November 14, 1995 via Earache Records — their last before an eleven-year breakup, and the album considered a landmark for Gothenburg melodic death metal. AllMusic gave it 5/5 stars, calling it “an excellent example of Gothenburg-style melodic death metal” and the band’s most focused album.

The listen

Unlike their peers, “Slaughter of the Soul” leaned more openly on American thrash — especially Slayer — and made no conscious attempt to break new ground. It was simply a bare, no-frills melodic death metal album that nailed all the genre’s key points with absolute success: rhythmically kinetic riffs, tight song structures and enough contrasts in tempo and dynamics to hold the listener.

Every track is accomplished: “Blinded by Fear” opens with fury, the title track “Slaughter of the Soul” has some of the genre’s most recognizable riffs, “Under a Serpent Sun” continues with venomous energy, and the close comes with the instrumental “The Flames of the End.” The guitars of the Björler brothers and Martin Larsson are dynamic and memorable, Adrian Erlandsson plays with a speed that recalls hardcore more than blastbeat-driven death metal, and Tomas Lindberg delivers some of the most tormented performances of his career.

The record’s influence is undeniable: it is widely considered one of the key sources of early-00s American metalcore, and Metal Injection ranked it #8 on its list of the 10 most influential metal albums. Rock Hard placed it at #300 of the 500 greatest rock & metal records of all time. A classic in every sense — influential for good reason and worthy of all its accolades.
