September 2026 left plenty of releases behind. Few, though, keep your interest after the first listens. Ten albums stand out during the month, from avant-garde and black metal to doom, thrash and old school death metal, with names from Chile to Japan. The picks are personal, judged on the music and not on popularity.
Critical Defiance – «Rivers of Blood» (Chile, thrash metal)
Fourth album for the quintet from Villa Alemana, with a wilder sound and a more punk approach than on their previous records. The songs tell a story and wrap up in about half an hour.
Death. Void. Terror. – «To The Great Monolith III: Rifts» (Switzerland, experimental black/doom metal)
On their third album the Swiss put aside the black and death structures and turn to a tribal, psychedelic atmosphere. Ritual vocals, chants and narration in an unknown language, in a result that fits a subgenre with difficulty.
Early Moods – «Ready For The Grave» (USA, doom metal)
The four from Los Angeles stick to the traditional doom of the 70s and 80s. Seven tracks, clean production and a ballad in the middle, in a style that will remind many of Trouble and Candlemass.
Fluisteraars – «Jacht der Mysteriën» (Netherlands, atmospheric black metal)
Sixth album for the duo from Bennekom, built on three long tracks played as spontaneously as possible. Its subject is the local legends of Gelderland and the landscapes of the area, with much of the running time in a quiet atmosphere.
Hadopelagyal – «Zalmathic Necroichorion» (Germany, black/death metal)
The German duo return with a four-track EP, after «Haematophoryktos». The sound is chaotic and suffocating, with bestial vocals and a heavy hit on the drums, without the dark atmosphere getting lost.
Krolok – «Hričov – Súľov – Lietava» (Slovakia, black metal)
The Slovaks from Bratislava keep on their third album the style of early and mid-90s black metal: simple structures, bolder passages. The songs revolve around castle ruins and their history, with a dungeon synth mood.
Nuclearhammer – «Xaos 333» (Canada, black/death metal)
The three-track EP was recorded in 2018 and comes after «Serpentine Hermetic Lucifer». Murky production, odd time signatures and warped vocals, for those who dig Tetragrammacide and Nyogthaeblisz.
Sigh – «Goh-ka» (Japan, avant-garde metal)
The thirteenth album by the Japanese takes as its subject the journey of the soul and the decay of the body, and comes out more extreme and more theatrical than the previous ones. The band has been moving in its own experimental sound for almost four decades.
Sněť – «V bažinách vědomí» (Czechia, death metal)
The second album by the Czechs from Prague gives more riffs and fuller production, with a surreal theme around swamps and altered states of the mind.
Tombstalker – «Chaos Monolith» (USA, old school death metal)
The second album by the quartet from Lexington leans on old school death metal, crust and thrash. Careful cover art, strong production and variety in the running order, with a theme of corruption and technology.
Beyond the top ten, September also had new releases from Runemagick, Krallice, Uncle Acid, Epitaphe, Witchburner and Discouraged, which are also worth a listen.
