The listen

The record’s six tracks — “Anqa”, “Hex Of The Frenzied Decay”, “The Soaring Enigmatic”, “Fell”, “الهمس الأول” (The First Whisper) and “Shadhavar” — make up half an hour of music that combines atmospheric elements with the noise of giant collapses. The progressive, gripping structures form a golden thread throughout the album, making it beautifully cohesive and captivating. The sound is advanced enough that you never get bored, and heavy enough that it hurts.

The influence of Arab or Persian culture on the music is rather subtle — it could have been written in Europe or North America too — but the atmosphere the band spreads over everything is unique. “Shadhavar” stands out with the myth of the creature of the same name and has already got a lyric visualizer, while the record comes with a full series of visualizers on YouTube. The recording was done by Hani Taqi at Studio 77 in Bahrain, with mixing and mastering by Ronnie Björnström.

“Six Rites” is an album that balances between heavy death metal and progressive structure, with a beautiful haze of atmosphere completing the package — an impressive debut that shows that extreme metal thrives even in the most unexpected parts of the planet. Those who love the evolution of the genre through records like Death’s will find plenty to appreciate here.
