Saxon – Denim and Leather | Metal Territory

«Denim and Leather» came out in 1981 and was Saxon’s fourth record. After two very good albums in 1980, Saxon continued on the same path and made a record that is considered today a classic for British heavy metal. The title speaks for itself: denim and leather, that is, the look and mentality of metal fans.

The record opens with «Princess of the Night», one of the band’s most famous tracks, about the legendary train of the era. «Never Surrender» shows the impressive voice of Biff Byford, which recalls Rob Halford of Judas Priest, while the whole album is full of fast guitar solos and strong riffs. The lyrics talk about the things the metal fan loves: motorcycles, parties and music.

«Denim and Leather» received a perfect rating of 4.5 out of 5 from Sputnikmusic, which called it essential for anyone who says they love 80s metal. The sound is tight and clean, with the two guitars of Graham Oliver and Paul Quinn playing twin solos in Judas Priest style, and Steve Dawson on bass with Pete Gill on drums keeping a steady rhythm.

Saxon never became as big as Iron Maiden, but they left behind a series of classic records, with «Denim and Leather» being one of the best. The record’s title hymn is still played today at every festival, with the crowd singing it on their feet.
